Anthropic Tests Higher Pricing for Claude Code as Usage Surges
A pricing experiment by Anthropic has ignited a wave of concern among developers and power users, after claims surfaced that access to its coding tool, Claude Code, may be shifting out of lower-tier subscriptions and into more expensive plans.
The issue gained traction after George Pu posted that Anthropic had quietly removed Claude Code from its Pro plan, pushing users toward the Max tier, priced at roughly $100 per month. The post alleged that the change came without formal communication, describing it as a silent update rather than an announced shift. It quickly spread across the platform, drawing millions of views and prompting sharp reactions.
Company Says Changes Are Limited to a Small Test
Anthropic moved to contain the fallout within hours. Amol Avasare (Head of Growth, AnthropicAI) clarified that the change is not a broad rollout but a controlled experiment affecting a small segment of users.
According to Avasare:
- The test applies to about 2% of new prosumer signups
- Existing Pro and Max subscribers are unaffected
- The company is still evaluating pricing and packaging options
He added that no final decisions have been made and emphasized that any future changes impacting existing users would be communicated in advance through official channels.

Product Evolution Is Driving the Pricing Shift
Behind the test lies a deeper shift in how Anthropic’s platform is being used. When the Max plan was originally introduced, the product was far more limited in scope. Claude Code was not included, collaborative features had not yet launched, and most users relied on short, chat-based interactions.
That model has changed dramatically over the past year.
- Claude Code adoption surged after newer model releases
- Long-running, asynchronous agents became common
- Users began running multi-hour, compute-heavy workflows
The result is a sharp increase in engagement per subscriber. What was once a lightweight AI assistant is now being used as a development and automation layer, placing far greater strain on infrastructure.
Avasare acknowledged that Anthropic has already introduced incremental controls, including weekly usage caps and tighter limits during peak demand. But those measures have not fully addressed the mismatch between pricing and usage intensity.
Backlash Highlights Concerns Over Transparency
Despite assurances that the test is limited, the reaction from the developer community has been immediate and, in some cases, hostile. Much of the criticism has centered on how the change surfaced rather than the change itself.
Users pointed to:
- A lack of formal announcement, with information spreading through social media
- The perception of a sudden and steep pricing jump
- Ongoing concerns around performance and reliability
Some users reported downgrading subscriptions or exploring alternatives, while others warned that unclear communication could erode trust at a critical stage of product adoption.
At the same time, a smaller group defended the move, arguing that advanced AI capabilities cannot remain underpriced indefinitely, especially as usage becomes more resource-intensive.
Competitive Undercurrents Surface
The episode also drew attention from outside Anthropic. Sam Altman briefly responded to the discussion, adding a layer of rivalry to an already tense situation. While the comment was dismissive, it reflected the increasingly competitive environment among leading AI platforms, where pricing and positioning decisions are closely watched.
A Turning Point for AI Pricing Models
Anthropic maintains that no immediate changes will affect current subscribers and that the company is still testing options. But the situation underscores a broader shift underway across the industry.
AI tools are rapidly evolving from simple chat interfaces into infrastructure-level systems capable of handling complex, long-duration tasks. As capabilities expand, so do the costs required to support them.
This creates a structural challenge:
- Lightweight users expect affordability
- Power users demand performance at scale
- Providers must balance both while maintaining margins
Anthropic’s experiment may be an early signal of how that balance will be struck. More segmented pricing, higher costs for intensive usage, and clearer differentiation between casual and professional tiers are likely to follow. For now, the company is walking a tight line between innovation and expectation. How it communicates the next move may matter as much as the move itself.
