OpenAI Closes Record $122 Billion Funding Round at $852 Billion Valuation
San Francisco, April 8, 2026
OpenAI has closed its largest funding round in history, raising $122 billion in committed capital at a post-money valuation of $852 billion. The announcement, made on March 31, 2026, makes OpenAI the most valuable private startup in history.
The round was anchored by Amazon ($50 billion), NVIDIA ($30 billion), and SoftBank ($30 billion), with continued participation from Microsoft. Andreessen Horowitz, D.E. Shaw Ventures, MGX, TPG, and T. Rowe Price co-led alongside SoftBank. Notably, $3 billion was raised from individual investors through bank channels, a first for the company. CNBC confirmed the round also includes OpenAI's expansion of its revolving credit facility to $4.7 billion, supported by JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and others.
OpenAI now generates $2 billion in monthly revenue and serves over 900 million weekly active users on ChatGPT. TechCrunch reported that enterprise use now makes up more than 40% of revenue and is expected to reach parity with consumer revenue by end of 2026. Its coding agent Codex serves over 2 million weekly users, up 5x in three months.
The capital will fund AI chip procurement, data center buildouts, and talent acquisition. Per Bloomberg, a significant portion of Amazon's $50 billion commitment is contingent on OpenAI going public or reaching the AGI milestone.
OpenAI's official announcement describes the funding as building "the infrastructure layer for intelligence itself," with the company positioning itself as core infrastructure for the AI era, not just a product company.
With a war chest of this scale and enterprise revenue accelerating, OpenAI may be positioning for a public debut that could push its valuation well past the $1 trillion mark, though no formal IPO timeline has been confirmed.
