OpenAI Prepares to Make a Historic Public Market Debut, Eyeing Up to $1 Trillion Valuation

October 2025 — The artificial-intelligence pioneer OpenAI is reportedly taking preliminary steps toward a public stock offering that could value the company at roughly US$1 trillion.

OpenAI’s decision to explore a public listing seems to stem from multiple motivations. First, the costs of scaling generative AI, from training large models to deploying global infrastructure, have surged. By moving toward a public offering, OpenAI could tap into a vastly larger pool of capital than private-funding rounds allow.

Additionally, the company’s recent restructuring appears to lay the groundwork for a listing. In the reports, OpenAI has repositioned itself to reduce its dependency on its major partner, Microsoft Corporation, and to operate with greater independence.

OpenAI may file for an IPO as early as the second half of 2026, with some advisers suggesting a listing could happen in 2027. The preliminary target for capital-raising is around US$60 billion or more, though exact figures remain fluid and subject to change.

These developments mark a significant shift for OpenAI, which until now has largely been funded through private investment and strategic partnerships. It would also bring heightened scrutiny over its profitability, governance, and ethical use of AI.

For the market, such a listing could solidify generative AI’s position as a core commercial industry and push other AI firms to follow suit. Yet, the valuation sets a high bar, and success will hinge on OpenAI’s ability to turn innovation into sustainable business performance.
