Atlas, available initially on macOS, allows users to search, summarize pages, and automate tasks through AI Chat within the browser using ChatGPT. The company said the product moves the technology closer to what it calls a “super-assistant” capable of understanding user context and acting across the web.
The browser includes optional “memory” features that let ChatGPT recall previous sessions and use that context in future conversations. Users can delete or disable these memories at any time, and OpenAI said browsing data will not be used for model training unless users opt in.
A new Agent Mode enables ChatGPT to carry out actions such as filling forms, collecting information, and booking services while users remain in control. The feature is being released in preview for Plus, Pro, and Business accounts.
OpenAI said Atlas cannot run code, download files, or access local applications, and pauses automatically on sensitive websites. The company added that it has conducted extensive security testing but acknowledged that “no system is fully immune” to potential misuse or malicious prompts.
The release signals OpenAI’s broader ambitions in consumer software, entering a market long dominated by Google Chrome, Apple Safari, and Microsoft Edge. Versions for Windows, iOS, and Android are planned in the coming months.
