See how ASML’s €1.3B move cements Mistral’s position as Europe’s AI frontrunner.

ASML Becomes Mistral AI’s Largest Shareholder After €1.3B Investment

Amsterdam / Paris, September 7, 2025 Dutch semiconductor powerhouse ASML has taken a commanding position in Europe’s AI race, emerging as the top shareholder in Mistral AI after leading a blockbuster €1.7 billion ($2 billion) Series C funding round.

The deal values Mistral at €10 billion ($11.7 billion) pre-money, officially making it Europe’s highest-valued AI startup. ASML will also gain a seat on Mistral’s board, signaling a long-term strategic partnership rather than a passive financial bet.

A Union of Hardware and AI Power

ASML, best known as the world’s sole supplier of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, critical tools for advanced semiconductor manufacturing, now gains a stake in one of Europe’s most ambitious AI startups. These €180 million per-unit machines already sit at the center of global chip supply chains, and pairing them with Mistral’s AI models opens doors for AI-driven chip design, predictive maintenance, and supply chain optimization.

Mistral, founded in 2023, has quickly established itself as a European counterweight to U.S. players like OpenAI and Anthropic. With a focus on open-weight models and sovereign AI strategies, Mistral has become a political and technological symbol for Europe’s independence in frontier AI.

Rapid Rise in Valuation

This funding round continues Mistral’s extraordinary climb:

  • June 2024 — Mistral raised Series B funding at a valuation north of $6 billion.
  • Late 2024–Early 2025 — Reports from the Financial Times and Bloomberg suggested investors were eyeing valuations as high as $14 billion.
  • September 2025 — The Series C round, with ASML at the helm, locked in a €10 billion valuation, cementing Mistral as Europe’s first AI “decacorn”.

The €1.7B infusion will help Mistral scale its infrastructure, expand global partnerships, and accelerate the development of large-scale, multimodal AI models.

Why This Deal Matters

  1. European Tech Sovereignty — With U.S. and Chinese firms dominating AI, Europe gains a homegrown champion with backing from its most critical chipmaker.
  2. Industrial Synergy — ASML can leverage Mistral’s AI to enhance semiconductor design, production efficiency, and equipment servicing.
  3. Policy Alignment — The investment reinforces the European Union’s push to secure AI and semiconductor supply chains as a matter of strategic independence.
