China Bans Its Tech Firms from Buying Nvidia AI Chips
Beijing, September 17, 2025 — Reported by Financial Times, China’s internet regulator has issued a sweeping ban preventing the country’s largest technology companies from purchasing artificial intelligence chips manufactured by Nvidia, in a move aimed at limiting foreign influence in advanced AI deployment.
The ban, announced today by the Cyberspace Administration of China, prohibits major firms in the internet, data centre, and cloud computing segments from acquiring Nvidia’s AI-enabled semiconductors. The regulation frames Nvidia chips as potential risks to national data security and strategic autonomy.
Industry analysts see this as part of Beijing’s broader technology decoupling strategy. A senior analyst at a Chinese state-backed think tank said the directive aligns with efforts to incentivize domestic chip design and production, even if local alternatives currently trail Nvidia’s performance.
Nvidia, a U.S.-based chip leader, has supplied China with high-end AI hardware critical to cloud providers, data centres, and research institutes. The ban threatens both sales from U.S. exports and Nvidia’s involvement in China’s tech ecosystem, particularly in machine learning, natural language processing, and generative AI applications.
