xAI Launches Skills for Grok on Web, iOS, and Android to Let Users Build Reusable AI Workflows
xAI has launched Skills, a new feature for its Grok AI assistant, simultaneously across web, iOS, and Android. Skills lets users build custom, reusable instruction sets that Grok executes on demand, turning the chatbot into a configurable automation workspace with persistent memory across conversations.
What Skills Is?
Skills lets users train the Grok for a task once and reuse it indefinitely. A saved Skill retains personal preferences, formatting rules, and workflow steps across all future conversations. Users no longer need to re-enter prompts or background context when starting a new session.
xAI describes the launch as Grok's shift from a single-interaction chatbot to a configurable automation workspace.
How It Works
A Skill is a saved instruction set tied to a specific task. Users build it once and execute it on demand.
Users can:
- Create templates for recurring tasks
- Import files into a Skill for structured processing
- Build separate Skills for separate workflows and stack them
- Set permanent tone, format, and context rules per Skill
Skills runs on Grok's 2 million token context window, the largest among Western closed models, giving it room to process large datasets inside a single session.
The Leak That Came Before
Tech analyst Nima Owji published early screenshots of Skills on March 27, 2026. Those screenshots showed a modular interface separate from the main chat window, with template creation tools and file import options. The feature flag was off at the time. xAI confirmed the full rollout on May 19.
What xAI Is Catching Up On
ChatGPT and Claude have carried persistent memory and reusable workflow features for over a year. Multiple reviews of Grok's $300 per month SuperGrok Heavy tier cited the absence of cross-session memory as the product's most defensible criticism at that price point.
Skills close that gap. It also goes further than simple memory by letting users program repeatable execution, not just store preferences.
xAI had previously shipped two lighter versions of personalization:
- Custom instructions: Baseline tone and context preferences applied passively across sessions
- Custom Timelines: Grok-curated content feeds across 75-plus topics for Premium users
Users can compare Grok and leading AI assistant models across real workflow tasks.
