Gemini Can Now Generate Files Directly in Chat
Google has announced an important new update to Gemini, enabling it to generate downloadable files directly inside chat, including Microsoft Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PDFs, CSV files, Markdown, and even LaTeX documents, a format widely used in scientific publishing and academic research.
The feature is rolling out globally across Gemini web and mobile, including for individual Workspace users, at no additional cost. Users type what they need, a budget sheet, a resume, an academic paper draft, or a presentation outline, and Gemini packages the output in the requested format, ready to download or export to Google Drive. No separate template, formatting pass, or conversion tool is required.
What the Update Delivers
Supported file formats at launch include:
- Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides
- PDF and Microsoft Word (.docx)
- Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) and CSV
- LaTeX, Plain Text (TXT), Rich Text Format (RTF), and Markdown
What This Looks Like in Practice
Google cited three examples at launch that illustrate the practical scope of the update:
- A student uploading lecture notes prompts Gemini 3.1 Pro to produce a study guide formatted as a PDF in LaTeX, complete with diagrams and equations, a workflow that Chatly's summary generator already handles across multiple models
- A team with a disorganized budget discussion converts the material into a clean Excel spreadsheet with a single instruction
- A writer with scattered research notes consolidates them into a formatted Word document, with no manual reformatting required
LaTeX Support and the Scientific Community
Among the supported formats, the inclusion of LaTeX carries particular significance. LaTeX is the typesetting system used by the majority of the scientific and academic community for formatting research papers, journals, and technical publications, a constituency that AI productivity tools have largely underserved.
Google's decision to include it in the initial release extends Gemini's utility well beyond general office use and into professional research workflows. The development is notable given that OpenAI recently released a dedicated application, Prism, specifically for LaTeX journal formatting, according to reporting by Engadget.
Current Limitations
Google confirmed the following constraints apply at launch:
- One file per prompt only, multi-file output in a single session is not yet supported
- Direct Microsoft PowerPoint export is not available; users can generate in Google Slides and convert as a workaround
- Google has not indicated a timeline for either limitation to be resolved
Personalization Features Also Expanding
Alongside file generation, Google confirmed two further Gemini updates rolling out internationally:
- Memories: Gemini now retains user preferences and contextual details across conversations, removing the need to re-establish context at the start of each session. Users on Chatly's AI Chat already benefit from persistent context across models in a similar way
- Import chats from other AI apps: Users can bring conversation histories from competing AI platforms into Gemini, preserving project continuity across services
Both features are rolling out in the United Kingdom now and are expected to reach full global availability within the coming weeks, the company said.
Competitive Context
Anthropic's Claude application has offered file generation and editing capabilities, including Excel spreadsheets, since September 2025, according to Engadget. ChatGPT has provided document export functionality in various forms for a comparable period.
Gemini's update is not the first instance of this capability in the AI assistant market, but it is the first to extend file generation to every Google account holder globally, at launch without additional charge.
For teams operating within Google Workspace, the native integration with Docs, Sheets, and Slides is expected to deliver practical advantages over competing tools that rely on external export steps.
